Learn analog photography in our darkroom

The Black and White Film Day is a photo workshop dedicated to discovering traditional photography.
During the day, you'll learn about black and white film shooting, traditional manual development, and silver gelatin printing in our darkroom.
This workshop is designed for a group of 3 to 5 students, supervised by a photo instructor who will guide beginners or those already familiar with film photography who want to learn about developing and printing.
This day is dedicated to the 35mm format. We recommend using a mechanical SLR camera for the shooting part (Nikkormat, Canon FTB, Minolta SRT, Pentax K1000...). We can lend you a camera if you don't have one or if yours doesn't meet the requirements (no extra charge). All consumables are provided: HP5 35mm 24-exposure film, developing chemicals, negative storage sheets, RC photographic paper and paper chemicals, as well as all the necessary equipment for using a silver gelatin darkroom.
The day unfolds as follows:
- Start at 9:00 AM: Introduction to the day with the Professor at our café La Limonade de Marinette, 46, rue Saint Georges 69005. Explanation and check of the shooting equipment and provided film. The group then sets off to take various types of photographs (interior, exterior, portrait, architecture, street, landscape...) with an emphasis on shooting theory and its subtleties.
- 11:00 AM: The group returns to our laboratory shop at 13, rue de la Bombarde 69005 to conclude the shooting session and begin developing the films shot in the morning. The various precautions and explanations of development are covered. The Professor develops the films in front of the students, providing blank films for practice with spiraling, handling a development tank, and film chemicals. Film development concludes with the drying phase, allowing the group to take a lunch break (not provided).
- 2:00 PM: After the break, the films are dry, and negative analysis can begin. Darkroom work can commence, with the Professor creating a contact sheet for each participant in front of the students, allowing you to analyze your morning photos. You can then select an image you wish to print using an enlarger (RC paper, 18*24cm format). This image will allow you to discover the enlarger, the principle of paper chemicals, and the magic of the image appearing before your eyes.
The day ends around 6:00 PM, having discovered all phases of Black and White silver halide photography. You will leave with your negative in a sleeve, your contact sheet, and a print made by you.
The price is individual and includes all taxes. If you wish to come on the same day with another person (or more), you can order the desired number of places and then provide us with the names of the participants. We can also accommodate entire groups for companies, bachelorette/bachelor parties, birthdays, events... The Black and White Darkroom Printing Discovery workshop is a photography workshop designed to introduce participants to traditional darkroom printing.
This workshop consists of a group of 3 to 5 students supervised by a Photo Professor who will guide beginners or those already familiar with film photography who wish to learn paper printing.
All consumables are provided: RC photographic paper and paper chemistry, as well as all the necessary equipment for using a darkroom and developing lab. You only need to bring a pre-developed and correctly exposed 35mm film.
- 2:00 PM: A theoretical introduction to the lab and its Darkroom section is given by the Professor, then students present the negatives they brought to select a film with which to make a contact sheet and an enlargement. Once the students are introduced to the rules and the lab environment, the practical session can begin. It starts with each participant making a contact sheet, allowing you to analyze the photos from your negative. You can then select an image you wish to print using an enlarger (18*24cm RC paper). This image will allow you to discover the enlarger, the principle of paper chemicals, and the magic of the image appearing before your eyes.

The Black and White Film Development Discovery workshop is a photography workshop that introduces participants to the first laboratory step after shooting: film development.
This workshop consists of a group of 3 to 5 students supervised by a Photo Instructor who will guide beginners or those already familiar with film photography who want to discover and master manual development so they can replicate it at home and become more independent in their film photography practice.
This day is dedicated to 35mm black and white film. If you wish to do the workshop with 120 film, it is possible, but you will need to inform us in advance.
- Start at 9:00 AM: The group meets at our lab shop at 13, rue de la Bombarde 69005. The workshop begins with a theoretical overview of different film types and the methodology for determining their development times. Then, we discover the various accessories and chemicals: tanks, chemicals, thermometers, sleeves, drying cabinet, etc. Once the different elements are understood, the practical part can begin with a dry run of spooling the film to teach students this crucial step. Then, the actual development can start, with each student having their individual Paterson tank, which will allow them to be in the same conditions as when they return home. Once the development is complete, the films are put to dry, and a review is done to clarify any misunderstood elements and correct errors. Once the films are dry, their analysis can begin, understanding the impact of the development carried out.
The day ends around 1:00 PM having discovered the development of a Black and White silver halide film; you will leave with your negative in a sleeve. We provide the chemicals, accessories, and equipment; you will need to bring a classic black and white film (24 or 36 exposures, such as Ilford, Kodak, Fomapan, Rollei) that has already been exposed and is ready to be developed. Be sure of the film you bring because successful development on a ruined, fogged, or poorly exposed film will inevitably be ruined.
The price is individual and includes tax. If you wish to come on the same day with another person (or more), you can order the desired number of spots and then provide us with the names of the two participants. We can also host entire groups for companies, bachelorette parties, bachelor parties, birthdays, events...
